Paddys Pub….My home a block from home

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

I am going to talk about a very special place for me. You can’t get food there, aside from chex mix and peanut M&Ms. However, you can stop in and have a drink or two before dinner, and then a couple more afterward. It may be a bar, but that realy only applies in name. It feels much more like a good friend has invited you into their home. It is the closest I feel to being in Ireland without actually being there. I am speaking of Paddys Pub.

No place in Milwaukee is like it, in fact, I have yet to find anyplace anywhere that is like it. The owners, Patty and Woody, are always on hand, if the pub is open, they will be there. Patty can always be found serving up the finest pints from behind the bar while Woody works the crowd, greeting everyone that comes through the door.

The crowd is a great mix of folks too. You can be sitting at the bar with a county judge on one side and a pair of college kids on the other. It does get pretty crowded on the weekends, especially when there is music, yet the crowd for the most part is a good one. You can easily make new friends everytime you walk through the front door.

If partaking of the intoxicating libations is not your forte, then just stop in to admire the decor. Whether it is the fine woodwork, the old Time magazine covers on the bathrrom walls, or the numerous pictures, this place is a work of art unto itself. If the upstairs is not open on the night you arrive, ask Woody for a tour, he is always willing to oblige and the second flor is something to behold.

If you do stop in, say hi, I tend bar every weekend myself.

Truly a wonder of God’s infinite love for us.  I am quite fond of the Red Breast 12 year pot still.  That is if I don’t want to drop a wad on my water of life.  Now, it can be a bit of an Achilles heel for me, as I may over indulge at times.  Still, for the price it is smooth, rich flavored with a hint of cherry.

If I realy feel like splurging, well, then I will go for the 21 year old Bushmills.  It smooths over your tongue and down the throat like a velvet blanket.  This is a wonderful whiskey, but it can dent the wallet a bit, most places charge about 25 bucks or so per shot.

You could always go for your run of the mill whiskeys, Jameson, Powers, Tullamore Dew.  Those will do if someone else is paying, but if it is my hard earned scratch, I will spend the extra dollar and get Red Breast.  To each their own I suppose.
